It was built by the Order of Santiago in the second third of XIII century, then qualified as santiaguista church "in terris desertis", is one of the most remarkable temples of Madrid. It has originally Latin cross plant with stony external look of fortress and internal gothic demeanour; in century XVI was added a spacious and wide central nave and other two lateral ones.
It can be accessed by three porticos of Jonico, Toscan and Doric order.
The magnificent tower, of 62 meters, is attributed to Juan de Herrera.
